Peter Obi, Igbo Leaders Hold Closed-Door Consultation with Jonathan Ahead of 2027 Polls

Frontline 2027 presidential aspirant and 2023 Labour Party candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, on Monday led a delegation of prominent Igbo leaders to meet with former President Goodluck Jonathan at his Maitama, Abuja residence. The closed-door meeting, which lasted about two hours, was attended by South East political figures, including former Enugu State Governor Dr. Okwesilize Nwodo, former Imo State Governor Chief Achike Udenwa, ex-NDDC Managing Director Chief Onyema Ugochukwu, and Senators Ben Obi and Victor Umeh.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Obi explained that the visit was part of ongoing consultations with national leaders regarding his 2027 presidential ambition. Now seeking the ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Obi clarified that the delegation had not come for an endorsement but for an exchange of views and advice.

“We need to consult them, especially someone like him (Jonathan), who served the country faithfully and with focus. In these challenging times, his democratic experience is invaluable,” Obi said.

Obi noted that he had previously met with other former leaders, including Olusegun Obasanjo and Ibrahim Babangida. While declining to reveal specific details of Monday’s discussion, Obi stated that Jonathan wished Nigeria well and emphasized the importance of free, fair, and credible elections.

Obi reiterated that no endorsement was sought or given during the visit, adding, “When I become a candidate, I’ll come back for endorsement. We are here to consult with him.”

The meeting highlights ongoing political consultations among Nigeria’s leading opposition figures as preparations intensify for the 2027 presidential elections.
