Former Anambra State governor and 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has donated ₦10 million to support the rebuilding of a fire-damaged primary school in his hometown of Agulu, Anambra State.
The donation was presented to Practising Nursery and Primary School following a devastating fire incident in December 2024 that reportedly destroyed parts of the school and left several classrooms badly damaged.
According to reports, the destruction forced many pupils to learn in unsafe and exposed conditions, with some classes temporarily conducted outdoors after roofs and classroom structures were affected by the fire.
Obi had earlier visited the school in November 2025 after concerns were raised about the deteriorating learning environment. During the visit, the school’s headmistress, Eucharia Egwuonwu, reportedly explained the challenges facing the institution, including the withdrawal of some pupils by worried parents due to safety concerns.
Moved by the condition of the school, Obi pledged financial assistance toward reconstruction efforts and improving the learning environment for the affected children.
Videos circulating online captured the presentation of the donation and showed sections of the damaged school buildings, including cracked walls and exposed classrooms, as community members and staff welcomed the intervention.
The donation has attracted praise from supporters and community members, many of whom commended Obi for continuing to support educational and humanitarian causes despite no longer holding public office.
Obi has built a reputation over the years for frequent donations to schools, hospitals, and community development projects across different parts of Nigeria, often emphasizing education as a key tool for national development and poverty reduction.
Political observers say such interventions continue to strengthen his public image among supporters who view him as a leader focused on social investment and grassroots impact.
The incident has also renewed attention on the condition of public schools in many Nigerian communities, where inadequate infrastructure, poor funding, and emergency disasters continue to affect access to quality education.
Residents of Agulu and parents of pupils at the school reportedly expressed gratitude for the donation, describing it as a major step toward restoring normal academic activities and rebuilding confidence in the school’s future.
