The Governor of Ekiti State, Biodun Oyebanji, has secured a second term in office after recording a decisive victory in the state governorship election, polling 319,224 votes to defeat his closest rivals.
The candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) won approximately 85 percent of the total valid votes cast, according to the final results announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) after the completion of collation in Ado-Ekiti in the early hours of Sunday.
His main challenger, Wole Oluyede of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), garnered 40,543 votes, while Dare Bejide of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) secured 12,872 votes.
The election recorded a turnout of less than 40 percent of registered voters, reflecting continued concerns over voter apathy and citizen participation in Nigeria’s electoral process.
Oyebanji’s victory is considered historic, as it makes him the first elected governor in Ekiti State to secure consecutive terms in office since the return to democratic governance in 1999.
Supporters of the governor attributed his victory to his administration’s performance in areas such as infrastructure development, youth empowerment programmes, and social welfare initiatives.
Celebrations erupted among APC supporters across parts of the state following the announcement of the results, with party members describing the outcome as a vote of confidence in the governor’s leadership and development agenda.
However, some opposition figures and critics raised concerns over aspects of the electoral process, citing reports of procedural challenges and the low level of voter participation.
Despite the criticisms, INEC maintained that the election process followed established guidelines and proceeded with the collation and declaration of results.
In his reaction to the victory, Oyebanji thanked the people of Ekiti State for renewing their mandate and pledged to build on the achievements of his first administration.
“The best has just begun,” the governor declared, promising greater commitment to infrastructure, economic growth, and improved welfare for residents during his second term.
Political analysts say the outcome strengthens the APC’s position in the South-West and provides the party with renewed momentum ahead of future electoral contests.
The election also highlights the continuing challenge of increasing voter participation and public confidence in democratic processes, even as political parties celebrate victories and prepare for future campaigns.
With a fresh mandate secured, attention is expected to shift toward how the Oyebanji administration will deliver on its promises and address the expectations of Ekiti citizens over the next four years.
