The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has congratulated Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, on his re-election, describing the outcome as an important victory for democracy and the people of Osun State.
Obi, in a statement, said the people of Osun had “spoken with courage and clarity,” reaffirming that the power to choose leaders ultimately belongs to the electorate.
According to him, Adeleke’s renewed mandate reflects the confidence reposed in the governor by the people, citing his commitment to their welfare, compassion for their needs and achievements recorded during his first term.
The NDC presidential candidate particularly commended the youths of Osun State for what he described as their courage, vigilance and peaceful defence of their democratic mandate.
He said the Osun experience demonstrates that when citizens remain vigilant and determined to protect their votes, democratic values can prevail.
“The lesson from Osun is clear: democracy is strongest when citizens are alert, conscious of their civic responsibility, and determined to ensure that their votes count,” Obi said.
He stressed that every legitimate vote must be respected and every lawful mandate protected, urging Nigerians to draw important lessons from the Osun election ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi called on Nigerians to remain informed, participate actively in the electoral process, vote and protect their votes, noting that citizens who bear the consequences of hunger, insecurity, deprivation and economic hardship also have the democratic power to demand change through the ballot box.
The former Anambra State governor also appealed to political actors to place the interests of Nigerians above partisan considerations and embrace peace, unity and the rule of law.
According to him, elections should not be treated as battles of violence, but as contests of ideas, competence, character and service to the people.
Obi expressed hope that the Osun experience would strengthen confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process and inspire citizens across the country to remain vigilant and committed to building a just, secure, prosperous and truly people-centred nation.
“A New Nigeria is POssible,” the NDC presidential candidate declared.
