Osun Election: Davido Challenges Edo Governor Okpebholo After Adeleke’s Victory

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has responded to remarks by Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo following the re-election of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.

Davido’s message came shortly after Adeleke secured victory in the Osun State governorship election, where he defeated his major challenger, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Taking to his Instagram Story on Sunday, Davido directly addressed Okpebholo and wrote, “@he_Mondayokpebholo get ready for me.”

The singer’s post followed comments attributed to the Edo governor concerning Adeleke, who is Davido’s uncle. The exchange has attracted attention on social media, particularly because Davido played a visible role in supporting Adeleke during the Osun election campaign.

The development is significant because it highlights how Nigeria’s entertainment figures are increasingly becoming involved in political discussions. Davido’s participation in the Osun election generated considerable public interest, with the singer using his large social media following to campaign for his uncle and encourage voter participation.

Adeleke ultimately secured re-election, defeating Oyebamiji in a closely watched contest. The outcome has since triggered reactions from politicians, celebrities and political commentators across the country.

Okpebholo, who is a member of the ruling APC, had previously made remarks about Adeleke’s conduct and public appearances that drew reactions from the governor’s supporters and Davido.

Although Davido’s latest message was brief, it has been widely interpreted as a warning that he intends to respond to the Edo governor’s political comments or challenge him publicly.

The exchange comes at a time when political conversations are already intensifying ahead of the 2027 general elections. Davido’s involvement in Osun has also renewed debate about the influence celebrities can have on voter mobilisation and political discourse.

Beyond the social media exchange, the Osun election has provided another indication of the increasingly close relationship between entertainment, celebrity influence and Nigerian politics. As political activities gather momentum, figures such as Davido are likely to remain influential voices in conversations surrounding elections and governance.
