Omo-Agege Dumps APC, Set to Join NDC Governorship Race Ahead of 2027

Former Deputy Senate President, Ovie Omo-Agege, has officially resigned from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a dramatic political development that is already reshaping calculations ahead of the 2027 elections in Delta State.

In a press statement dated May 22, 2026, and signed by his Media Adviser, Sunday Areh, the former Delta Central senator announced that his resignation followed extensive consultations with political associates, supporters, and stakeholders across the state.

Addressing his resignation letter to the Chairman of Orogun Ward 2 in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Omo-Agege said recent developments within the APC in Delta no longer align with his political objectives and the interests of his constituents.

“I will not remain a sitting duck in a party where I cannot advance the interests of Delta Central, Delta State and Nigeria,” he stated.

Reliable political sources within Delta State indicate that Omo-Agege is now set to join the emerging National Democratic Congress (NDC) coalition, where he is expected to contest the governorship race as one of the leading figures in the party’s South-South expansion strategy.

The development is seen by analysts as a major boost for the NDC’s growing influence in Delta State, particularly as several opposition stakeholders continue negotiations aimed at building a formidable coalition against the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party structure in the state.

Omo-Agege, who served as Deputy President of the 9th Senate under former President Muhammadu Buhari, thanked the APC for the platform it gave him during his years in national leadership.

“I thank the APC for the opportunity to serve as Deputy President of the 9th Senate. I wish the party well and have requested that my name be removed from all membership records, registers, and communication lists,” he added.

Political observers say his exit represents one of the most consequential defections in Delta politics in recent years and could trigger a wave of realignments across the South-South ahead of the 2027 general elections.

With the NDC intensifying efforts to attract heavyweight politicians across Nigeria, Omo-Agege’s expected entry into the governorship race is already generating discussions about a possible three-way contest capable of redefining Delta’s political landscape.
