Nigerian musical talent was the undisputed star of the 9th All Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA), with the nation’s artists sweeping major categories in a celebration of African sound hosted in Lagos.
The week-long event, held from January 7-11 and officially designated by the African Union Commission, culminated in a sold-out grand finale at the Eko Convention Centre. It showcased the powerful reach and innovation of Nigeria’s music industry, with next-generation stars and established icons alike taking home the coveted 23.9-carat gold-plated trophies.
A Clean Sweep for Nigerian Excellence
The awards night was a testament to the diversity and strength of the Nigerian scene. Rema emerged as a top winner, securing the prestigious Artiste of the Year award alongside Best Male Artiste in Western Africa and Best African RnB & Soul.
Burna Boy claimed the Album of the Year honour, while his collaboration with Shallipopi on the hit track that won Song of the Year also earned them the Best African Collaboration award. Shallipopi’s double victory highlights the vibrant crossover appeal of Nigeria’s evolving sound.
The awards recognized artistry across genres. Veteran rapper Phyno was named Best African Hip-Hop, and the rising star Qing Madi was crowned Most Promising Artiste. Yemi Alade won Best Soundtrack, and Chella received the African Fans’ Favourite award. In a nod to industry pillars, executives Kenny Ogungbe and Dayo Adeneye were honoured with the AFRIMA Legendary Award.

The 9th AFRIMA brought together over 1,216 artistes, delegates, and stakeholders from at least 48 African countries, underscoring its role as the continent’s premier music awards platform. The festivities began with a Welcome Soiree and an Africa Music Business Summit, fostering industry dialogue and partnership.
The energy moved to the public sphere on January 9 at the AFRIMA Music Village, Ikeja City Mall, where over 25 top artists performed for a crowd exceeding 20,000 fans, creating an electrifying prelude to the main awards ceremony.
