Nigeria Opens Primaries Window for 2027 Elections Amid Labour Party Tensions

Political parties in Nigeria have commenced preparations for the 2027 general elections following the opening of a 38-day window to conduct primaries and nominate candidates for key positions across the country.

The timeline, which runs from April 23 to May 30, requires parties to complete internal nomination processes for presidential, governorship, and legislative seats. Parties are also expected to submit their membership registers by May 10 as part of the electoral requirements.

The development comes amid ongoing internal tensions within the Labour Party. Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, stated in a recent interview that it would be legally impossible for the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to seek nomination under the party for the upcoming elections.

Usman cited procedural constraints, including the closure of party membership registers and existing zoning arrangements, which reportedly favor the southern region, as key factors behind the position.

Meanwhile, Obi’s political future remains a subject of debate following his reported move to the African Democratic Congress in March 2026 after internal divisions within the Labour Party.

Reactions to the situation have been mixed. Some supporters have dismissed calls for Obi’s potential return to the Labour Party as politically motivated, while others interpret the development as a consequence of the deepening fractures within the party.

Political analysts say the tight primary schedule underscores the intensity of preparations ahead of the 2027 elections, while also highlighting broader issues such as zoning arrangements and internal party cohesion.

With the clock already ticking, parties are expected to accelerate consultations and negotiations to meet the deadline, setting the stage for what is anticipated to be a highly competitive electoral cycle.
