Nigeria at 66: NSCDC Deploys 3,000 Personnel Across Abuja to Strengthen Security

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Federal Capital Territory Command, has deployed 3,000 personnel across Abuja ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1.

The deployment, ordered by the FCT Commandant, Dr Olusola Odumosu, is aimed at strengthening security, enforcing law and order and protecting lives and property before, during and after the Independence celebrations.

According to the NSCDC, the operation covers strategic locations and areas considered vulnerable to security breaches, including shopping malls, markets, motor parks, amusement and recreational centres, as well as Critical National Assets and Infrastructure across the Federal Capital Territory.

Personnel from specialised units, including the Arms Squad, Female Strike Force, Crack Squad, Agro Rangers, Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives (CBRNE) Unit and Counter-Terrorism Unit, have been deployed as part of the security operation.

The Corps also activated undercover personnel for covert surveillance and intelligence gathering. Uncompleted buildings and other identified areas regarded as potential criminal hideouts are being monitored to prevent possible security breaches.

Odumosu directed Area Commanders and Divisional Officers to maintain effective security coverage across their respective Area Councils. He also instructed personnel to work with other security agencies and comply with established rules of engagement.

“As usual, I will not tolerate any form of security breaches. All hands must be on deck,” Odumosu said.

The command further warned personnel against harassment and intimidation of citizens and accidental discharge of firearms. Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities to the nearest security agency.

The deployment comes as Abuja prepares for activities marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary. The NSCDC is responsible for protecting lives and property, maintaining public safety and safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure.

The anniversary will be observed nationwide on October 1, commemorating Nigeria’s independence from British colonial rule in 1960.
