NDC Member Petitions Trump Over Alleged Democratic Backsliding in Nigeria

A member of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Great Imo Jonathan, has written a petition addressed to the President of the United States, calling for international intervention over what he describes as the erosion of democratic institutions under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The petition, which is also copied to the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria and the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, appeals to the United States to use diplomatic channels to urge the Nigerian government to uphold democratic principles, the rule of law, judicial independence, press freedom, and electoral integrity.

In the letter, the petitioner argues that Nigeria’s democratic system is under increasing pressure and warns that continued democratic backsliding could threaten the country’s stability. He contends that Nigeria’s strategic importance as Africa’s largest democracy makes developments in the country significant for regional security, economic cooperation, and Western interests.

The petitioner further claims that if democratic institutions continue to weaken, Nigerians could lose confidence in democratic governance, creating conditions that may encourage anti-democratic forces and alter Nigeria’s foreign policy orientation.

Among the requests made in the petition are that the United States publicly and diplomatically encourage the Nigerian government to protect democratic institutions, work with the European Union and other allies to address concerns about democratic governance in Nigeria, and reaffirm support for democracy rather than any political party or individual.

The petition also reiterates the petitioner’s view that the outcome of the 2023 presidential election remains disputed by many Nigerians, a claim that reflects the author’s opinion and political position. It is worth noting that the election results were officially declared by the , and subsequent legal challenges were resolved through Nigeria’s judicial process, which affirmed the declared winner.

Alongside the petition, supporters have circulated a message encouraging recipients to forward the document widely in the hope that it reaches U.S. President Donald Trump.

As of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the U.S. Embassy in Abuja, the European Union Delegation, or the Nigerian government regarding the petition.
