Leaders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) on Sunday held a strategic engagement with coordinators and members of the Obidient Movement drawn from across Nigeria, signaling growing collaboration between the party and supporters of former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi.
The meeting, attended by members of the party’s National Working Committee, focused on strengthening grassroots structures and integrating new supporters into the NDC nationwide ahead of the evolving political landscape toward 2027.
During the interaction, party leaders commended members of the Obidient Movement for their role in promoting democratic participation during the 2023 general elections and for sustaining political engagement afterward. The coordinators, representing different states of the federation, were urged to work closely with NDC state chairmen to ensure effective integration into the party’s organizational framework.
Addressing the gathering, the party leadership acknowledged the sacrifices and resilience of opposition supporters, emphasizing the importance of sustaining the momentum for democratic change and national renewal.
The leadership also reflected on its long-standing experience in opposition politics, describing the movement for reform and accountability as a continuous struggle that predates the 2023 elections.
The event further witnessed the formal reception of prominent Bayelsa businessman and politician Diepreye Abaye Leghemo, popularly known as “Dangote of Bayelsa,” into the NDC. Party officials welcomed his entry into the platform and expressed confidence that his involvement would strengthen the party’s outreach and political influence in the Niger Delta region.
In another notable development, the party received the donation of a vehicle from a young supporter based in Kano State. The donation was publicly acknowledged by party leaders, who expressed appreciation to supporters and contributors backing the growth of the NDC through financial and material support.
According to the party leadership, the increasing influx of supporters from different political movements, professional backgrounds, and regions demonstrates a growing national desire for political transformation, social justice, and improved governance.
Political observers say the engagement reflects ongoing efforts by the NDC to consolidate support among youth-driven political movements and dissatisfied opposition blocs as preparations for future elections gradually intensify.
The Obidient Movement, which emerged prominently during the 2023 election cycle, remains one of the most active grassroots political networks in Nigeria, particularly among young voters and urban professionals advocating reform-oriented leadership.
Analysts believe that continued collaboration between the movement and emerging political platforms such as the NDC could significantly influence opposition politics in the coming years, especially if broader coalition efforts materialize ahead of the 2027 elections.
The latest developments add to the growing momentum surrounding political realignments in Nigeria, where parties and movements are increasingly seeking strategic partnerships aimed at reshaping the country’s democratic future.
