The Nigeria Democratic Congress has officially announced the commencement of its nationwide primary elections for aspirants seeking governorship, National Assembly, and other elective positions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
According to the party leadership, direct primaries will begin today in constituencies and local government headquarters across the country for aspirants who were unable to reach consensus arrangements within their states and districts.
The party said the decision followed a series of consultations involving the National Working Committee (NWC), the Selection Committee, and key stakeholders after the conclusion of the screening exercise conducted by the committee chaired by former Ebonyi State governor, Sam Egwu.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, the NDC disclosed that all aspirants who purchased Expression of Interest Forms would be permitted to participate in the primaries within their respective constituencies.
The party further revealed that successful aspirants emerging from the exercise would proceed to the party’s National Secretariat for documentation, payment of nomination fees, and completion of nomination formalities.
The NDC also confirmed the deployment of primary election committees and senior party officials to states nationwide to supervise the exercise and ensure compliance with party guidelines.
Speaking earlier on the process, the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, urged aspirants to embrace consensus where possible in order to preserve party unity and avoid unnecessary internal disputes. He described the NDC as one of the fastest-growing opposition movements in the country and reiterated the party’s commitment to transparent internal democracy.
The development comes amid rising political realignments across Nigeria’s opposition landscape ahead of the 2027 elections, with the NDC positioning itself as a major alternative platform challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress and rival opposition blocs.
