Morocco’s head coach, Walid Regragui, has reportedly submitted his resignation to the Moroccan Football Federation following the national team’s defeat in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final against Senegal.
The loss came after a demanding tournament campaign for the Atlas Lions, who entered the final as strong contenders. According to Morocco World News, Regragui is said to be physically and mentally exhausted after the intense schedule, particularly with preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup set to begin in the coming months.
Local media reports indicate that the Moroccan Football Federation has not yet accepted his resignation and is making efforts to persuade him to continue in his role. Should he eventually step down, Regragui is reportedly being linked with a potential move to the Saudi Pro League.
Born in France, Regragui enjoyed a modest playing career with clubs including Toulouse, AC Ajaccio, Grenoble, and Racing Santander. However, his managerial career has been far more distinguished. He previously led Wydad AC to CAF Champions League glory and has established himself as the most successful head coach in the history of the Moroccan national team.
The former Wydad Casablanca coach came within a penalty of securing Morocco’s first major international trophy since 1976. Since his appointment as national team coach in 2022, Regragui has overseen a remarkable period for Moroccan football, guiding the Atlas Lions to a historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and an impressive run at the AFCON tournament.
