Former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, on Thursday drew a large crowd during a visit to the Singer Market in Kano, where a devastating fire had earlier destroyed goods worth billions of naira.
The fire incident, which occurred on February 3, left many traders counting heavy losses. Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf had visited the affected market a day earlier to commiserate with the victims.
Kwankwaso’s visit, which was reportedly unannounced, attracted spontaneous gatherings of supporters who cheered and thronged his vehicle as he moved through the area. In a message shared afterward, the former governor expressed sympathy with the traders and prayed that Allah would replace their losses.
Governor Yusuf later returned to the market the same day, where he reiterated the state government’s commitment to providing assistance to those affected by the fire.
The visits come amid heightened political tension in Kano, as both NNPP leaders contend with speculation surrounding possible defections and ongoing displays of loyalty by their respective supporters.
