The national convention of the African Democratic Congress has officially commenced in Abuja, drawing delegates, party leaders, coalition stakeholders, and political observers from across the country.
The gathering is expected to shape the future direction of the party ahead of the 2027 political landscape, amid ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s opposition movement. Reports indicate that key discussions at the convention will focus on party restructuring, constitutional amendments, leadership ratification, and strategies for strengthening internal democracy.

Speaking during the event, the Anambra State ADC Secretary, Pastor Lawrence, addressed COPDEM Media TV, describing the convention as a major turning point for the party. He noted that the gathering became possible following the victory recorded at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where the legacy state chairmen were recognized as the substantive ADC state chairmen.
According to him, the court ruling also granted the authentic leadership structure the legal backing to proceed with the organization of the national convention. He maintained that the judgement restored legitimacy to the party’s structure and strengthened confidence among members across the federation.
Pastor Lawrence further stated that party faithful remain optimistic that the convention would deepen internal democracy, consolidate unity within the party, and reposition the ADC as a formidable political force ahead of future elections.
However, political observers say it remains to be seen what becomes of the leadership structure associated with former Senate President David Mark, following the latest legal and organizational developments within the party. Analysts believe the evolving leadership situation may shape the future balance of power and coalition dynamics within the ADC in the months ahead.
Prominent political figures, delegates, and coalition stakeholders were seen arriving at the convention venue amid heavy security presence and heightened political interest, as discussions on the future of the party continue in the nation’s capital.
