Labour Party Begins Nationwide Ward Congresses, Usman Commends INEC

The Labour Party Nigeria has commenced its nationwide ward congresses, marking the first phase of its internal electoral process ahead of its national convention.

The Interim National Chairman, Nenadi Usman, participated in the exercise at Jere South Ward in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State, where the congress was held jointly with Jere North Ward.

Speaking after observing the process, Usman said party members peacefully elected new executives to oversee affairs at the grassroots level. She described the exercise as orderly and in line with party expectations.

“This marks the commencement of our congresses at the ward level. What you have seen here are Jere North and Jere South conducting their congresses together, as is customary. New executives have been duly elected,” she said.

Usman outlined the next stages of the exercise, noting that the party will proceed to local government and state congresses before culminating in a national convention scheduled to take place in Umuahia.

She also reaffirmed the party’s commitment to inclusivity, emphasizing the importance of increased female participation in leadership positions, particularly within party administration.

According to the party, ward congresses were conducted across Nigeria’s 8,809 political wards. Newly elected ward executives are expected to participate in the local government congresses scheduled for April 24, followed by state congresses on April 25, and the national convention on April 28, 2026.

Usman expressed satisfaction with reports from across the country, describing the exercise as largely peaceful and well-coordinated. She also commended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for its professionalism and timely deployment of monitoring teams.

“Reports from across the federation indicate that the exercise was largely peaceful and well-organised, with INEC playing a commendable role through timely monitoring,” she added.

She urged party members to maintain the peaceful conduct observed during the ward congresses throughout the remaining stages of the process.
