King Charles to Host Nigerian President for First State Visit in 37 Years

King Charles III is set to host the President of Nigeria on a two-day state visit, marking the first such visit by a Nigerian leader to the United Kingdom in 37 years.

The last state visit by a Nigerian head of government took place in 1989, when the country’s then military ruler, General Ibrahim Babangida, was received by Queen Elizabeth II. The upcoming visit signals a renewed phase in diplomatic relations between both countries.

The programme is expected to feature full state honours, including a ceremonial welcome with military displays, a carriage procession and a state banquet at Buckingham Palace. In addition to the ceremonial events, bilateral talks will focus on strengthening cooperation in key areas such as trade, investment and security.

The visit comes amid strong economic ties between Nigeria and the UK, with bilateral trade estimated at £7.9 billion. Discussions are also expected to build on a new partnership agreement signed in 2024, aimed at deepening collaboration across economic and strategic sectors.

Reactions among Nigerians have been mixed. Supporters have described the visit as a significant diplomatic achievement that enhances Nigeria’s global standing and reinforces its relationship with a major international partner. Critics, however, have questioned the emphasis on high-profile diplomacy at a time when the country is grappling with economic hardship and persistent security challenges at home.

Despite the differing views, the visit is widely seen as a landmark moment in UK–Nigeria relations, underscoring both countries’ interest in renewing long-standing historical and strategic ties.
