The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has reaffirmed that it will not extend the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise for the 2027 general elections, stating that its electoral timetable does not permit any adjustment to the registration deadline.
Responding to growing appeals for more time, the electoral body said “there’s nothing we can do” about requests to prolong the exercise, emphasizing that all activities leading to the 2027 elections must be completed according to the commission’s approved schedule.
INEC explained that the voter registration process is only one phase of a broader electoral calendar that includes data verification, compilation of the final voter register, production and distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), and preparations for election-day logistics. According to the commission, delaying the registration deadline could disrupt these critical activities and affect the overall planning for the polls.
The commission urged Nigerians who have not yet registered, as well as those seeking to transfer their voting locations or update their personal information, to complete the process before the registration window closes. It stressed that eligible citizens bear the responsibility of meeting the deadline if they intend to participate in the 2027 elections.
The development is important because voter registration is the gateway to electoral participation in Nigeria. By maintaining the existing timetable, INEC has made it clear that individuals who miss the deadline risk being excluded from the voters’ register and, consequently, from casting ballots during the next general election.
INEC, Nigeria’s constitutionally empowered electoral management body, is responsible for conducting federal and state elections and maintaining the national register of voters. The commission has previously faced similar requests for registration extensions during election cycles but has consistently maintained that strict adherence to its electoral timetable is necessary to ensure credible, transparent, and well-organized elections across the country.
