Political commentator Imran Wakili has claimed that former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has inflicted significant political damage on former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), arguing that the opposition may struggle to recover ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Wakili made the remarks while reacting to recent political developments involving key opposition figures and ongoing coalition talks aimed at presenting a united front against the ruling party in the next electoral cycle.
According to him, Babachir Lawal’s actions and public statements have created divisions within the opposition, weakening public confidence in efforts to build a formidable alliance capable of challenging the incumbent government. He argued that internal disagreements and conflicting political interests could undermine the credibility of any coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Wakili further stated that Atiku Abubakar, a leading opposition figure and former presidential candidate, together with the ADC, now faces the difficult task of rebuilding trust among supporters and convincing Nigerians that the coalition remains united despite recent controversies.
However, political observers note that coalition negotiations often involve differing opinions and strategic disagreements before final agreements are reached. They believe it is too early to conclude that the opposition has suffered irreversible political setbacks, as discussions among major stakeholders are expected to continue in the coming months.
Neither Atiku Abubakar, the ADC leadership, nor Babachir Lawal had officially responded to Wakili’s comments at the time of filing this report.
With preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gaining momentum, political analysts expect more consultations, endorsements, and public exchanges among leading political actors as parties work to strengthen their positions.
