Gbajabiamila Urges Abejide to Remain in ADC Amid Defection Speculation

Nigeria’s Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila, has advised lawmaker Leke Abejide to remain in the African Democratic Congress (ADC), amid growing speculation about possible defections ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Gbajabiamila made the remarks during Abejide’s wedding anniversary celebration held in Abuja, where political figures and associates gathered to honor the legislator. His comments come at a time of heightened political realignments across party lines.

Call for Party Loyalty

Speaking at the event, Gbajabiamila praised Abejide’s rising profile within the ADC, describing him as a key figure in strengthening the party’s structure and influence. He urged the lawmaker not to abandon the platform he has contributed to building.

According to him, Abejide should remain committed to the party despite internal challenges, encouraging him to “hold on to your party” and continue engaging in its internal processes rather than seeking alternatives elsewhere.

The Chief of Staff also commended Abejide’s leadership style and political approach, noting that his efforts have earned admiration across party divides. He expressed confidence in Abejide’s ability to further develop his political base within the ADC.

Defection Pressure Mounts

Gbajabiamila’s comments follow a recent public invitation by former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello, who reportedly urged Abejide to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The invitation is seen as part of broader efforts by the APC to attract influential politicians from other parties as preparations gradually begin for the next electoral cycle.

Broader Political Context

Abejide, who represents Yagba Federal Constituency, is regarded as one of the prominent figures within the ADC, a party currently grappling with internal leadership disputes and strategic positioning ahead of 2027.

Political analysts say the competing appeals—from remaining within the ADC to joining the APC—highlight the ongoing contest for political influence and alignment among Nigeria’s elite.

They note that decisions by key actors like Abejide could have implications not only for party strength but also for coalition-building efforts in the run-up to the next elections.

Outlook

As political maneuvering intensifies, observers will be watching closely to see whether Abejide maintains his position within the ADC or aligns with another party. For now, Gbajabiamila’s message underscores the importance of party loyalty and internal consolidation in Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
