Fresh Arms Possession Probe Rocks Abubakar Malami’s Kebbi Home Amid Ongoing EFCC Trial
Reported by Akor Christian Oche, COPDEM Media TV.
Abuja, Nigeria — Former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami (SAN), is now facing a fresh national security investigation after arms and ammunition were reportedly uncovered at his country residence in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State.
According to security sources, operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) allegedly discovered the cache of weapons and ammunition during the course of their ongoing probe into financial crimes linked to Malami. Because the anti-graft agency lacks statutory authority to investigate allegations of illegal arms possession, the cache has been handed over to the Department of State Services (DSS) for a comprehensive security investigation.
Details of the New Development
• Discovery of Arms & Ammunition:
The reported cache was found at Malami’s Birnin Kebbi residence, though authorities have not yet released official details on the exact number or type of weapons recovered.
• DSS Investigation Launched:
The DSS has taken over the matter to determine how the former AGF came into possession of the arms, since illegal weapons possession falls outside the EFCC’s mandate.
• Malami Still in Custody:
Malami and his family were recently granted bail in an unrelated money-laundering trial before the Federal High Court in Abuja, but he remains at the Kuje Correctional Centre reportedly because he has yet to meet stringent bail conditions.
• Nationwide Attention:
Sources say DSS operatives have been deployed around the correctional facility to ensure Malami’s cooperation once bail conditions are met and raise questions about whether he may be formally questioned on the arms discovery.
Context: Existing EFCC Trial
Malami, his wife Asabe Bashir, and son Abubakar Abdulaziz are currently on trial before a Federal High Court in Abuja on charges of money laundering and unlawful acquisition of wealth, allegedly involving billions of naira in suspicious transactions and property acquisitions.
Last week, the court ordered the interim forfeiture of 57 properties linked to Malami and his sons — including assets in Abuja, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna — valued at over ₦213 billion and suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities. The court also directed that interested parties have 14 days to show cause why the assets should not be permanently forfeited.
Official Statements Pending
So far, neither Malami’s legal team nor the DSS has issued an official public comment on the arms investigation. The EFCC has maintained that its broader case against the former minister is lawful and longstanding, and denies any allegation that the probe is politically motivated.
