The Federal Government has disclosed that suspected commanders of the terrorist groups Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province were apprehended at Katsina Airport while returning from the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.
According to government officials, the suspects were identified through intelligence gathering and security screening conducted as pilgrims arrived in Nigeria. The operation was part of ongoing counterterrorism efforts aimed at tracking and intercepting individuals linked to insurgent activities.
Authorities stated that the arrests demonstrate the increasing collaboration among Nigeria’s intelligence and security agencies in monitoring suspected terrorist movements and preventing the regrouping of extremist networks.
The Federal Government emphasized that enhanced surveillance has been deployed at airports, land borders, and other entry points to strengthen national security and ensure that individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism are identified and investigated in accordance with the law.
Security officials noted that investigations are ongoing to determine the extent of the suspects’ alleged involvement in terrorist operations and whether they maintained links with insurgent cells operating within Nigeria or neighbouring countries.
The arrests come as Nigerian security forces continue sustained military operations against Boko Haram and ISWAP in the North-East, alongside intelligence-led efforts to disrupt financing, recruitment, logistics, and cross-border movements of extremist groups.
Counterterrorism experts have observed that returning foreign travelers may be subjected to additional screening where credible intelligence indicates possible security threats, stressing that such measures are intended to safeguard national security while respecting due process.
The Federal Government reiterated its commitment to intensifying efforts against terrorism, stating that no individual suspected of supporting or directing extremist activities would be allowed to evade justice.
The apprehended suspects are expected to face further investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings in accordance with Nigeria’s counterterrorism laws.
