Federal Government Says No New Taxes Planned Amid Ongoing Fiscal Reforms

The Federal Government has dismissed reports suggesting that it plans to introduce new taxes, insisting that its ongoing fiscal reforms are focused on improving tax administration rather than placing additional financial burdens on Nigerians.

Government officials clarified that there are no plans to increase taxes, stressing that the current tax reform agenda is designed to simplify the tax system, expand the tax base, and improve revenue collection from existing tax laws.

According to the government, the reforms are aimed at ensuring greater compliance, reducing tax evasion, and creating a more transparent and efficient tax administration process. Authorities said these measures would help boost national revenue without imposing fresh taxes on individuals or businesses.

The clarification comes amid growing public concern over the rising cost of living and speculation that new tax measures could worsen the economic challenges faced by households and businesses. Officials reassured Nigerians that the administration remains committed to implementing policies that encourage economic growth while protecting citizens from unnecessary financial pressure.

The government further noted that improving tax collection efficiency is a key component of its broader economic strategy to finance infrastructure, healthcare, education, and other critical public services. It emphasized that widening the tax net, rather than increasing tax rates, would ensure that more eligible taxpayers contribute fairly to national development.

Economic analysts say the government’s position may help ease concerns among investors and business owners who have expressed fears over the possibility of higher taxes. They also believe that effective implementation of the reforms could strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s fiscal management.

The Federal Government urged Nigerians to rely on official statements regarding tax policies and avoid misinformation circulating on social media, reiterating that no new tax increase has been approved as part of the ongoing reform programme.
