Davido Supports Financial Independence in Marriage, Says Couples Can Keep Separate Accounts

Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has weighed in on how couples should manage money in marriage, saying partners can maintain separate bank accounts without it necessarily creating problems in their relationship.

The singer shared his opinion during an appearance on The Uncut Podcast, where he was asked about women maintaining personal or secret accounts outside their relationships. Davido said he considers the practice reasonable and stressed that financial independence should apply to both partners.

“Yeah, I think it’s good. I actually think they should; you never know,” Davido said.

He further explained that he would not be upset if he discovered that his wife, Chioma, had an account he was unaware of.

“If I ever found out that my wife had a secret bank account, I’d not be angry; I think everybody should have their own,” he added.

Davido’s position has generated discussion around financial independence, trust and responsibility in relationships. While some couples prefer to combine their finances through joint accounts, others maintain individual accounts alongside shared funds for household expenses and long-term plans.

The singer’s comments suggest that having personal finances should not automatically be interpreted as a sign of distrust or a lack of commitment. Instead, he presented individual financial resources as a form of preparedness for unforeseen circumstances.

The subject remains particularly relevant as more couples balance separate careers, businesses and sources of income. Financial arrangements can vary considerably depending on a couple’s circumstances, values and agreements.

Davido, one of Nigeria’s most prominent Afrobeats artistes, has frequently attracted public attention for his views on relationships, family and personal finances.

His latest comments have added a celebrity perspective to the broader conversation about money management in marriage. Ultimately, whether couples choose joint accounts, separate accounts or a combination of both remains a personal decision that depends on mutual understanding, transparency and financial goals.
