Security authorities have raised concerns that sustained military operations against insurgents and bandits in parts of northern Nigeria are forcing some criminal elements to migrate to the South-East and South-South regions of the country.
The warning was issued by security officials who said recent intelligence reports indicate that terrorists and other violent criminal groups displaced from their traditional strongholds are seeking new operational bases in areas perceived to have lower security pressure.
According to the officials, ongoing offensives by the Armed Forces and other security agencies have significantly degraded the capabilities of several terrorist networks in the North-East and North-West, compelling surviving members to disperse and relocate to other parts of the country.
The development, they said, underscores the evolving nature of Nigeria’s security challenges and the need for vigilance across all regions.
Security experts explained that criminal groups often respond to military pressure by changing tactics, shifting locations, and exploiting ungoverned spaces to rebuild their networks. They warned that such movements could increase security risks in areas previously considered less vulnerable to terrorist activities.
Authorities noted that the South-East and South-South regions have strategic economic assets, extensive forest areas, waterways, and transportation corridors that could attract criminal elements seeking to evade security operations.
They, however, emphasized that security agencies are actively monitoring the situation and have intensified intelligence gathering, surveillance, and inter-agency cooperation to prevent the establishment of new terrorist cells.
The warning comes amid ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to strengthen national security through coordinated military operations, intelligence sharing, and community-based security initiatives.
Residents in the affected regions have been urged to remain alert and promptly report suspicious movements, abandoned camps, or unusual activities to security agencies.
Community leaders and civil society organizations have also been encouraged to support law enforcement efforts by promoting awareness and discouraging local support networks that could enable criminal groups to operate.
Security analysts say the reported migration of criminal elements highlights the importance of a nationwide approach to counterterrorism. They argue that success in one region must be accompanied by preventive measures elsewhere to avoid merely displacing security threats rather than eliminating them.
While acknowledging progress recorded against insurgents in several theatres of operation, experts stressed that sustained military pressure, improved intelligence capabilities, and stronger community engagement remain essential to preventing terrorist groups from regrouping in new locations.
The latest warning has renewed calls for greater collaboration between federal and state governments, security agencies, traditional institutions, and local communities to ensure that emerging threats are detected and neutralized before they gain a foothold.
