The Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Musa, has stated that criminal activities in the Niger Delta have reduced significantly, attributing the improvement to sustained military operations and enhanced collaboration between security agencies and local communities.
Speaking during an official engagement, the minister said ongoing security efforts have helped curb crimes such as crude oil theft, pipeline vandalism, sea piracy, and illegal refining, which have long threatened the region’s economic stability and national oil production.
According to Musa, the Armed Forces and other security agencies have intensified intelligence-driven operations across the Niger Delta, leading to the dismantling of several criminal networks and the recovery of stolen petroleum products. He noted that the improved security situation reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting critical national assets and ensuring peace in the oil-rich region.
The minister also commended security personnel for their dedication and professionalism, stressing that their efforts have contributed to increased confidence among investors and host communities. He urged residents to continue supporting security agencies by providing credible information that could help prevent criminal activities.
Musa emphasized that while progress has been recorded, the government remains committed to sustaining operations against criminal elements. He warned individuals involved in illegal activities to abandon crime or face the full weight of the law.
Security analysts believe the reported reduction in criminal activities could positively impact Nigeria’s crude oil production, government revenue, and economic growth. They, however, stressed the need for continuous surveillance, community engagement, and investment in youth empowerment programmes to address the root causes of insecurity in the region.
Community leaders have also called for increased infrastructure development, employment opportunities, and environmental restoration, arguing that sustainable peace in the Niger Delta requires both effective security measures and inclusive economic development.
As efforts to strengthen security continue, the Defence Minister reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to maintaining peace and stability across the Niger Delta. He expressed optimism that sustained collaboration among security agencies, state governments, traditional institutions, and local communities would further reduce criminal activities and support long-term development in one of Nigeria’s most economically strategic regions.
