Former Vice President and presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has reportedly intensified consultations in search of a suitable running mate following reports that respected economist and former international development executive, Ngozi Okonkwo Iwela, declined an offer to serve as vice-presidential candidate.
Sources familiar with the discussions said Atiku had considered several prominent technocrats and political figures as part of efforts to strengthen his ticket and broaden its national appeal. However, Ngozi Okonkwo Iwela is said to have turned down the proposal, citing personal and professional considerations.
The development has reportedly prompted Atiku’s camp to widen its search, with consultations extending across different geopolitical zones and among influential stakeholders within and outside the political establishment.
Political observers note that the choice of a running mate remains a critical decision in Nigeria’s electoral landscape, often influencing regional balance, voter perception, and coalition-building efforts. As a result, parties typically weigh factors such as competence, political experience, electoral value, and national acceptability before making a final selection.
While there has been no official confirmation from Atiku’s media team regarding the reported offer or its rejection, insiders suggest that discussions are ongoing and that several names remain under consideration.
Analysts believe the eventual choice could play a significant role in shaping campaign strategy and strengthening support ahead of future political contests. The search is expected to continue until a consensus candidate emerges who aligns with Atiku’s political objectives and broader coalition plans.
As consultations continue, attention remains focused on who may eventually emerge as the preferred candidate to complement Atiku’s political ambitions and help consolidate support across the country.
