The legal dispute between former Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) housemates Bella Okagbue and Segun “Sheggz” Olusemo has taken a fresh turn after Bella’s lawyers rejected the defamation allegations against their client and issued counterclaims.
In a letter dated August 24, 2026, Bella’s legal team described the claims contained in Sheggz’s earlier cease-and-desist notice as “spurious and baseless.” They argued that Bella’s social media comments reflected her personal experiences and feelings from their relationship and did not amount to defamatory statements.
Sheggz’s lawyers had reportedly demanded that Bella retract statements they considered defamatory and issue an apology. The notice also reportedly placed a ₦500 million figure on the alleged damage arising from her comments.
Rather than accept the demands, Bella’s lawyers rejected the proposed retraction and apology and introduced fresh allegations concerning the former couple’s relationship.
The legal team alleged that Sheggz breached a promise to marry Bella and misrepresented his intentions during their relationship. They also accused him of obtaining multiple loans from Bella under false pretences, saying they possessed evidence to support the claims and were prepared to pursue the matter before a competent court.
Bella’s lawyers further accused a member of Sheggz’s legal team of allegedly contacting their client through unsolicited messages, calls and video calls at inappropriate hours, warning the individual to desist.
The development is significant because what began as a highly publicised celebrity breakup has now escalated into a potential legal battle, with both sides presenting competing accounts of their relationship.
Neither side’s allegations have been established by a court, and the parties remain entitled to due process.
Bella and Sheggz became prominent after appearing together on BBNaija, where their relationship attracted considerable attention from viewers. Their subsequent romance continued to generate public interest after the show.
With both legal teams now exchanging formal correspondence, attention will shift to whether the dispute proceeds to substantive court proceedings or is resolved before litigation.
