Bandits Allegedly Plant Explosive Device on Sokoto Road to Delay Security Response

Suspected armed bandits reportedly planted an improvised explosive device (IED) on a road in Sokoto State in what authorities believe was an attempt to hinder the movement of security personnel responding to criminal activities in the area.

According to preliminary reports, the explosive device was discovered or detonated along a route frequently used by security operatives, raising concerns over the evolving tactics being employed by armed groups operating in parts of northwestern Nigeria.

Security sources indicated that the suspected objective was to slow or prevent the rapid deployment of military and law enforcement personnel during ongoing counter-banditry operations.

The incident has prompted heightened vigilance among security agencies, with explosive ordnance specialists and other personnel reportedly deployed to assess the affected area and ensure the route is safe for motorists and security operations.

The use of improvised explosive devices represents a significant escalation in the capabilities of some criminal groups, as such devices have historically been associated with insurgent organizations but are increasingly being linked to bandit networks in parts of the North-West.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious objects or activities along roads and public spaces, warning members of the public against approaching unidentified items that could pose a danger.

Security agencies continue to intensify intelligence-led operations across Sokoto and neighbouring states to dismantle armed groups, rescue kidnapped victims, and restore peace in affected communities.

Officials have reiterated their commitment to ensuring the safety of residents and maintaining pressure on criminal networks despite the evolving threats posed by bandit groups.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing, while security forces continue clearance operations and enhanced patrols to prevent further attacks and safeguard critical transport routes.
