Amnesty International has raised fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in Nigeria, revealing that at least 10,217 people were killed in attacks by armed groups across seven states during the first two years of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.
According to the human rights organisation, the deaths occurred in Benue, Niger, Katsina, Kebbi, Plateau, Sokoto, and Zamfara states, where communities have continued to suffer deadly attacks by bandits and other gunmen.
Amnesty International said the alarming figure reflects the deepening insecurity across the country, with thousands of families displaced, livelihoods destroyed, and entire communities left vulnerable despite repeated government promises to restore security.
The organisation called on the Federal Government to urgently strengthen the protection of civilians, ensure justice for victims, and hold perpetrators of the attacks accountable. It also urged Nigerian authorities to adopt more effective strategies to address the growing wave of violence affecting rural communities.
The report adds to mounting criticism over the country’s security challenges, as many Nigerians continue to demand stronger action against banditry, mass killings, and armed attacks across several regions.
