Atiku Explores ADP Option as Obi Deepens Grassroots Push for ADC Candidates

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has intensified consultations outside the African Democratic Congress (ADC), holding a closed-door meeting with the National Chairman of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Yabagi Yusuf Sani, and other senior party executives at his Abuja residence on Saturday.

The high-level engagement comes amid growing speculation about realignments ahead of the next electoral cycle, particularly rumours of a possible understanding between Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to challenge for the ADC presidential ticket—an outcome that could complicate Atiku’s pathway within the opposition space. While the meeting has fueled talk of Atiku weighing alternative political platforms, ADP leadership was quick to play down such interpretations.

Speaking after the meeting, ADP National Chairman Yabagi Yusuf Sani dismissed claims that the talks were aimed at a merger or recruitment drive, stressing that the engagement should not be misconstrued as an attempt to woo Atiku into the party. According to him, discussions were broad-based and exploratory, reflecting ongoing national consultations rather than any immediate political pact.

Meanwhile, Peter Obi has continued to build momentum on the ground, focusing on grassroots mobilisation and support for ADC candidates nationwide. His sustained engagement with youths, civil society groups, and local party structures has reinforced perceptions of a bottom-up campaign strategy, contrasting with elite-level negotiations dominating the opposition landscape.

As alignments shift and consultations deepen, the opposition field appears headed for a period of strategic recalibration—one defined by parallel tracks of grassroots organising and high-stakes political dialogue, with far-reaching implications for 2027.
