The All Progressives Congress (APC) has donated N52 million to survivors and families of 37 miners who died while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Niger State.
Niger State Governor Umaru Bago disclosed the donation on Tuesday when he received the APC National Working Committee, led by National Chairman Nentawe Yilwatda, during a condolence visit to the state. Bago thanked the party for its financial support and said arrangements had been made to ensure that the money reaches the intended beneficiaries.
According to the governor, a committee headed by Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba, in collaboration with the Emir of Minna, Farouk Umar-Bahago, would oversee the distribution of the funds to the affected families and survivors.
Yilwatda expressed the APC’s condolences to the Niger State Government and residents, describing the deaths as a difficult moment for the state, which has recently faced several security challenges.
“This is not a good moment for the country, especially Niger State,” the APC chairman said.
He also prayed for strength and comfort for the bereaved families and assured the state government of the party’s support.
The donation comes amid ongoing investigations into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. The Federal Government has constituted a 10-member independent committee to investigate the incident, including the circumstances of the miners’ arrest, detention, medical care and deaths. Several NSCDC officers, including the Niger State Commandant, were suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.
The development is significant because the deaths have generated concerns over the treatment of people held in government custody and calls for accountability. President Bola Tinubu had ordered a full and transparent investigation, saying suspected illegal miners retained their rights to life, dignity and humane treatment while in custody.
The miners were arrested during NSCDC operations targeting suspected illegal mining activities in Niger State. Their deaths on September 17 have since prompted condolence visits and financial assistance, including a separate N20 million donation by former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to the affected families.
The investigation is expected to determine the circumstances and responsibility surrounding the deaths, while the APC donation provides immediate financial support to some of the affected families.
