The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the economic policies of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, alleging that recent reforms have worsened poverty and deepened hunger across Nigeria.
In a statement issued by the party, the ADC argued that the government’s economic decisions, including the removal of fuel subsidies and the liberalisation of the foreign exchange market, have significantly increased the cost of living. According to the opposition party, the reforms have placed enormous financial pressure on households and businesses, resulting in higher prices for food, transportation, and other essential goods.
The party claimed that many Nigerians are struggling to cope with rising inflation and declining purchasing power, adding that the economic hardship has continued to affect vulnerable groups across the country. It urged the Federal Government to review its economic policies and introduce measures that would provide immediate relief to citizens.
The ADC further called for targeted interventions aimed at reducing inflation, supporting local food production, and creating employment opportunities. It maintained that economic reforms should be accompanied by stronger social protection programmes to cushion their impact on low-income households.
The criticism comes amid ongoing national debate over the effects of the administration’s economic reforms. While the government has maintained that the policies are necessary to stabilise the economy, improve public finances, and attract investment, opposition parties and labour groups have continued to express concern over their short-term impact on citizens.
Economic analysts note that Nigeria has experienced sustained increases in the prices of food, transportation, electricity, and other basic commodities over the past year. They also observe that the government has introduced several intervention programmes intended to ease the burden on vulnerable households, although opinions remain divided over their effectiveness.
The ADC urged the administration to engage more closely with stakeholders, including the private sector, labour unions, and civil society organisations, in developing policies that balance economic reforms with social welfare.
