The Federal Government has congratulated the Super Eagles on their third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), describing the team’s performance as a source of national pride and inspiration.
In a statement issued on Saturday, January 18, 2026, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, lauded the national team for winning the bronze medal and for their display of resilience, unity, and professionalism throughout the tournament.
According to the minister, the Super Eagles upheld Nigeria’s rich football heritage, showing passion and determination from the group stages to the closing moments of the competition in Casablanca. He noted that the team’s performance inspired millions of Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.
Idris said the bronze medal further reinforces Nigeria’s strong legacy at the Africa Cup of Nations and reflects the discipline and fighting spirit displayed by the players against formidable opponents. He described the result as confirmation of Nigeria’s status as a leading force in African football.
The minister also commended the coaching crew, technical staff, and players for their dedication and sacrifices, noting that the team confronted challenges with resolve and demonstrated the importance of teamwork, belief, and national pride.
While acknowledging that the ultimate prize was not secured, Idris said the achievement was earned with honour and belongs to Nigerians who supported the team throughout the competition. He encouraged the players to celebrate the milestone and draw motivation from it as they prepare for future challenges.
“The Super Eagles have once again made the nation proud,” the minister said, adding that Nigeria salutes the team for their efforts and commitment.
