Wike Says Majority of FCT Projects Completed in 2025 Were Initiated Over 16 Years Ago

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that nearly 70 percent of the projects recently completed under his administration were originally awarded more than 16 years ago but remained abandoned by successive governments.

Speaking during the inauguration of several infrastructure projects in Abuja, Wike said his administration prioritized completing long-neglected projects to improve infrastructure and ensure value for public funds. According to the minister, many of the projects had stalled despite substantial government investment, depriving residents of essential public facilities.

Wike explained that rather than initiating entirely new projects, the FCT Administration focused on reviving abandoned contracts that had lingered for years. He noted that completing the inherited projects demonstrates the government’s commitment to continuity, accountability, and efficient use of taxpayers’ money.

The minister added that his administration has intensified efforts to restore confidence in governance by ensuring contractors return to project sites and deliver quality infrastructure within agreed timelines. He emphasized that completing legacy projects would stimulate economic activities, improve transportation, and enhance the quality of life for residents of the nation’s capital.

According to Wike, the ongoing infrastructure drive is part of broader reforms aimed at transforming Abuja into a modern capital city capable of meeting the demands of its rapidly growing population. He also assured residents that more abandoned projects would be revived and completed in the coming months.

Political observers say Wike’s remarks highlight the long-standing challenge of abandoned public projects in Nigeria, where changes in administration have often resulted in delayed or discontinued infrastructure development. Analysts believe completing existing projects before embarking on new ones could improve public confidence and reduce waste in government spending.

The FCT Administration has continued commissioning roads, bridges, and public facilities across Abuja as part of its strategy to accelerate infrastructure development and improve service delivery.
