Petrol Price Speculation: Nigerian Filling Stations Suspend Sales Over Expected Price Increase

Several filling stations across Nigeria have reportedly suspended the sale of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), popularly known as petrol, amid growing expectations of another increase in pump prices.

The temporary suspension follows widespread speculation that depot owners and major fuel suppliers may adjust prices in response to rising replacement costs and developments in the downstream petroleum sector. Reports indicate that some independent marketers have chosen to withhold sales rather than risk selling existing stock below anticipated market prices.

Industry sources say uncertainty over ex-depot pricing has created caution among fuel retailers, with many operators waiting for official pricing updates before resuming normal sales. This has led to long queues at stations that remain open, while motorists in several cities scramble to secure fuel before any price adjustment takes effect.

The latest concerns come as Nigeria’s downstream oil market continues to respond to fluctuations in global crude oil prices and changes in supply dynamics. Analysts note that increases in international oil prices and higher landing or replacement costs often influence local petrol prices, especially in the deregulated market.

Although there has been no official announcement confirming a nationwide increase in petrol prices, marketers say they are closely monitoring market conditions before making further decisions. Consumers have expressed concern that another hike could trigger higher transportation costs and increase the prices of goods and services across the country.

Energy experts have urged the government and key stakeholders to provide clear communication to prevent panic buying and unnecessary disruptions in fuel distribution. They also emphasized the importance of maintaining steady product supply to minimize artificial scarcity and stabilize the market.
