The Nigerian Senate has strongly condemned the renewed wave of xenophobic attacks against Nigerians in South Africa, calling on the South African government to provide firm guarantees for the safety and security of Nigerian citizens residing in the country.
The upper legislative chamber expressed concern over reports of violence, harassment, and destruction of property involving foreign nationals, stressing that the recurring attacks have continued to threaten the lives and livelihoods of many Nigerians.
During plenary, lawmakers urged the Federal Government to intensify diplomatic engagements with South African authorities to ensure that those responsible for the attacks are identified, prosecuted, and held accountable. The Senate also emphasized the need for stronger bilateral cooperation to prevent future incidents and improve the protection of Nigerians abroad.
Lawmakers noted that Nigeria and South Africa share long-standing diplomatic and economic ties, making it imperative for both nations to work together in addressing issues that could undermine their relationship. They maintained that the safety of Nigerian citizens should remain a priority in all diplomatic discussions between the two countries.
The Senate further called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian High Commission in South Africa to closely monitor developments and provide necessary support to affected Nigerians. It also encouraged Nigerians living in South Africa to remain law-abiding while promptly reporting security threats to relevant authorities.
The renewed concern follows reports of fresh xenophobic incidents that have reignited public debate over the treatment of foreign nationals in South Africa. Previous outbreaks of similar violence have resulted in fatalities, injuries, and the destruction of businesses owned by Nigerians and other African nationals.
