The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila pending an independent investigation into allegations surrounding the purported Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council (PFIPC).
In a statement issued on Friday, the opposition party said the allegations raised by Prince Matthew Adeniyi Adeyemi, who claims to be the Director-General of the PFIPC, warrant a transparent and impartial inquiry. The Presidency has previously stated that the PFIPC is not a recognised government agency.
According to the NDC, the allegations have raised concerns about transparency and accountability within government institutions. The party questioned claims that the alleged agency reportedly maintained financial accounts, including a Treasury Single Account (TSA), a domiciliary account, and a pound sterling account with the Central Bank of Nigeria, despite official claims that the agency does not exist.
The opposition also urged the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation and other relevant institutions to clarify whether any official documentation was used in relation to the alleged accounts and administrative processes linked to the agency.
The NDC further referenced allegations made by Adeyemi claiming that public appointments and take-off funds were linked to financial demands involving senior government officials. The party argued that, if established through due process, such allegations would raise serious questions about governance and institutional integrity.
Calling for accountability, the NDC said temporarily stepping aside from office would allow investigations to proceed without interference and strengthen public confidence in the outcome. The party stressed that an independent inquiry remains the most appropriate way to determine the facts surrounding the controversy.
Legal experts have emphasized that the allegations remain unproven and that all individuals mentioned are entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence until any wrongdoing is established by a competent court or investigative authority.
