ADC Criticises Court Ruling on NDC, warns against one-party state

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the recent Federal High Court ruling affecting the registration of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), warning that developments capable of weakening opposition parties could undermine Nigeria’s democratic system.

In a statement reacting to the judgment, the ADC expressed concern over what it described as attempts to narrow the country’s political space, cautioning that Nigeria must avoid drifting toward a one-party state.

The party argued that democracy thrives on robust political competition and the existence of credible alternatives, stressing that all political parties should be allowed to participate freely in the electoral process in accordance with the Constitution and the law.

The remarks followed a ruling by the Federal High Court in Lokoja, Kogi State, which set aside an earlier judgment that had compelled the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to register the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). The NDC has since announced that it will challenge the decision before the Court of Appeal, insisting that it remains a registered political party while the legal process continues.

According to the ADC, political disagreements and questions surrounding party registration should be resolved through transparent judicial processes without creating the impression that opposition voices are being unfairly targeted.

The party warned that any perception of restricting political participation could erode public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic institutions ahead of the 2027 general elections.

While reaffirming its commitment to peaceful and lawful political engagement, the ADC called on all institutions involved in the electoral process to uphold fairness, impartiality, and respect for constitutional rights.

Political analysts note that the controversy surrounding the NDC’s registration has become one of the early legal contests shaping preparations for the 2027 elections, with the outcome of the pending appeal expected to clarify the party’s legal status.

The ADC reiterated that a healthy democracy depends on the existence of multiple political parties competing on a level playing field, urging stakeholders to protect Nigeria’s democratic space and ensure that voters retain the freedom to choose from a broad range of political alternatives.
