Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has met with former Kano State Governor and leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, in Kano, fueling fresh speculation about political realignments ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.
The private meeting, held at Kwankwaso’s residence in Kano, attracted significant attention from political observers, who view it as a strategic consultation amid growing discussions over possible alliances ahead of the next presidential election.
Although details of the discussions were not officially disclosed, sources close to the meeting indicated that national issues, governance, security, economic challenges, and the future of Nigeria’s democracy featured prominently in the conversation.
Neither Obasanjo nor Kwankwaso addressed reporters immediately after the meeting, leaving room for speculation over its political significance. However, aides to both leaders maintained that the engagement was part of routine consultations on matters affecting national development rather than an endorsement of any political ambition.
The meeting comes at a time when political parties and influential figures are beginning to position themselves for the 2027 elections, despite the polls still being months away. Analysts believe consultations among key political stakeholders are likely to intensify as parties evaluate potential alliances and candidates.
Obasanjo has remained an influential voice in Nigeria’s political landscape since leaving office in 2007, frequently engaging with leaders across party lines on governance and national unity. Kwankwaso, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the NNPP, continues to command a strong political following, particularly in northern Nigeria.
