NDLEA Arrests Two Elderly Men Over Alleged Drug Sales to Students in Abia

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two elderly men, both grandfathers, over allegations of selling illicit drugs to students in Abia State.

According to the anti-drug agency, the suspects were apprehended during intelligence-led operations aimed at dismantling drug distribution networks operating around educational institutions and protecting young people from substance abuse.

The NDLEA said preliminary investigations indicate that the elderly suspects were involved in the sale of prohibited substances to students, raising fresh concerns over the availability of drugs within communities and the vulnerability of young people to drug addiction.

Officials of the agency described the development as disturbing, noting that individuals who should ordinarily serve as role models in society were allegedly participating in activities capable of damaging the future of young Nigerians.

The arrests form part of the NDLEA’s broader campaign against drug trafficking, abuse, and the illegal sale of narcotics across the country.

The agency has repeatedly warned that the spread of illicit substances among students and youths poses serious threats to public health, education, and national security.

Security experts have observed that increasing access to drugs among young people can contribute to poor academic performance, mental and physical health challenges, and involvement in criminal activities.

The agency stated that the suspects would undergo further investigation and would be prosecuted in accordance with the provisions of the law if found culpable.

Parents, teachers, and community leaders have been urged to strengthen monitoring and awareness efforts to prevent children and adolescents from being exposed to illegal substances.

The incident has also renewed calls for stronger collaboration between law enforcement agencies, schools, families, and local communities in tackling the root causes of drug abuse among students.

The NDLEA has maintained that it will continue intelligence-driven operations across the country to disrupt drug supply chains and bring those involved in the illicit drug trade to justice.

The arrest of the two elderly men underscores the agency’s position that no individual, regardless of age or social status, is exempt from accountability under Nigeria’s drug laws.

As investigations continue, the case has sparked wider conversations about the changing nature of drug distribution networks and the urgent need for sustained efforts to protect Nigerian youths from the dangers of substance abuse.
