Ex-NYSC DG Alleges Banditry Thrives on Internal Support Networks in Nigeria

Former Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga, has alleged that armed banditry in parts of Nigeria is being sustained not only by criminal gangs but also by individuals with influence and access to power structures.

Speaking during a security-focused forum, Tsiga claimed that the activities of bandits across several regions would not be as persistent without alleged backing from insiders who provide intelligence, logistics, and protection. He argued that this support network complicates efforts by security agencies to effectively combat insecurity.

The former NYSC DG stressed the need for a comprehensive national response that goes beyond military operations, calling for improved intelligence gathering, accountability within security institutions, and stronger community engagement. According to him, addressing insecurity requires identifying and dismantling all enabling structures, both within and outside criminal networks.

His remarks have sparked renewed debate on the root causes of insecurity in Nigeria, particularly in the northern region, where banditry, kidnapping, and rural attacks remain major concerns. Security analysts say such allegations highlight the complexity of the crisis and the need for coordinated action across multiple levels of government.

Authorities have not officially responded to the claims, but the statement continues to generate public discussion on governance, security reform, and the fight against organized crime.
