Abia Cracks Down on Commercial Motorcycles Amid Rising Security Concerns

The Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations in major urban centres, including Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia, as part of renewed efforts to tackle insecurity and improve public safety across the state.

The decision, unveiled by state authorities, follows growing concerns over the alleged involvement of some commercial motorcycle operators in criminal activities such as armed robbery, kidnapping, and other security breaches. Government officials said the measure is aimed at strengthening law enforcement efforts and creating a safer environment for residents and businesses.

Under the new directive, commercial motorcycles, popularly known as “okada,” will no longer be allowed to operate within designated areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia. Security agencies have been directed to enforce the ban strictly, while alternative transportation options are expected to be introduced to ease movement within the affected cities.

The government urged residents to cooperate with security personnel and comply with the new regulations, emphasizing that public safety remains a top priority. Officials also noted that the ban forms part of a broader strategy to combat crime and enhance security infrastructure across the state.

While some residents have welcomed the move, others expressed concerns about its impact on transportation and the livelihoods of motorcycle operators. Authorities, however, insist that the long-term benefits of improved security outweigh the temporary inconveniences.
