Armed Men in Uniforms Alarm Travelers on Highways

Fresh concerns over insecurity have emerged in northern Nigeria following the circulation of disturbing videos showing armed men dressed in military-style uniforms stopping travelers along highways in states such as Katsina and Zamfara.

The footage, which has been widely shared on social media since June 18, shows individuals wearing camouflage patterns resembling those used by the Nigerian Army. Some of the men were seen carrying sophisticated weapons, while others appeared to be wearing casual footwear such as flip-flops, raising suspicion about their identities.

Many residents and online commentators have alleged that the individuals are bandits disguising themselves as soldiers to deceive motorists and establish illegal checkpoints for kidnapping, robbery, and other criminal activities.

The use of military-style uniforms by criminal groups has become a growing concern for security agencies, as such disguises can make it difficult for civilians to distinguish between legitimate security personnel and armed criminals.

Security experts warn that impersonation of security forces not only increases the vulnerability of travelers but also undermines public confidence in official institutions responsible for protecting citizens.

The videos surfaced at a time when several northern communities continue to battle persistent attacks by bandits, who operate from remote forest areas and frequently target villages, highways, and travelers for ransom.

Katsina and Zamfara states have remained among the regions most affected by banditry, with repeated reports of abductions, killings, and attacks on communities despite ongoing military operations.

While the authenticity of the individuals seen in the videos and their exact identities had not been independently verified, the images have intensified public demands for stronger security measures along major roads and vulnerable rural corridors.

In response to worsening security challenges, the Federal Government recently approved the use of ₦500 billion from May 2026 revenues as an emergency security intervention aimed at strengthening military operations, improving logistics, and enhancing the capacity of security agencies.

Authorities say the funding is intended to support ongoing efforts against banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other forms of violent crime threatening national stability.

As of the time of reporting, the Nigerian Army had not issued an official statement specifically addressing the videos circulating online.

Security analysts have urged travelers to exercise caution, avoid isolated routes where possible, and report suspicious checkpoints or unusual activities to relevant authorities.

They also called for stricter controls over military uniforms and equipment to prevent them from falling into the hands of criminal groups.

The development has once again highlighted the evolving tactics employed by bandits and the broader security challenges facing Nigeria’s northern region.

For many citizens, the sight of armed men wearing military attire but behaving suspiciously represents a dangerous erosion of trust, where even symbols of security can be exploited by criminals to instill fear and carry out attacks.

As security operations continue, Nigerians await official clarification on the identity of the armed men and stronger measures to ensure that highways remain safe for travelers.
