The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), , has expressed concern over the obstacles confronting Nigerian youths, arguing that the country’s environment stifles innovation and limits opportunities for young people to thrive.
Speaking on the challenges facing the younger generation, Obi stated:
“As a Nigerian youth, the system is already against you. If Bill Gates, Steve Jobs and all these great people were here, they won’t even start.”
According to Obi, the current socio-economic and institutional realities in Nigeria make it difficult for talented young people to maximize their potential. He suggested that many globally celebrated innovators and entrepreneurs would have struggled to succeed if they had been subjected to the same constraints faced by Nigerian youths.
The remark has sparked conversations about youth unemployment, access to quality education, entrepreneurship, technology development, and the broader challenges of doing business in Nigeria. Supporters argue that the statement highlights the urgent need for reforms that create opportunities for innovation, productivity, and economic inclusion.
Critics, however, maintain that despite existing challenges, many young Nigerians continue to achieve remarkable success across various sectors, demonstrating resilience and creativity in difficult circumstances.
Obi’s comments add to the ongoing national debate about how best to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s youthful population and create an environment where talent, innovation, and enterprise can flourish.
