Supporters of Peter Obi have argued that criticism directed at him from across Nigeria’s political spectrum demonstrates his growing influence ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Obi, who recently emerged as the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), continues to attract strong support among many young voters, professionals, and reform-minded Nigerians. His backers contend that attacks from figures linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and even some former allies within the Labour Party indicate that he is viewed as a significant political challenger.
Many supporters frequently cite Obi’s tenure as governor of Anambra State between 2006 and 2014, pointing to improvements in education, healthcare, and fiscal management during that period. They often reference claims that he left substantial financial reserves and reduced public debt, presenting these achievements as evidence of his governance philosophy.
His supporters also contrast his record with current national economic challenges, including rising public debt, inflation, unemployment, and cost-of-living pressures. They argue that Obi’s emphasis on fiscal discipline, production-driven growth, and anti-corruption measures offers a different approach to governance.
However, critics challenge this narrative. Opponents argue that governing a state differs significantly from managing a complex federal economy and contend that some of the claims surrounding Obi’s record are overstated. Political analysts note that strong criticism can sometimes reflect political relevance, but they caution that popularity alone does not guarantee electoral success.
