Tinubu’s 2023 Electricity Promise Returns to Spotlight Amid Persistent Power Crisis

A campaign-era video of President Bola Tinubu has resurfaced online, reigniting debate over the state of electricity supply in Nigeria as millions of households and businesses continue to grapple with frequent blackouts and unreliable power.

In the widely shared 2023 clip, recorded during a business engagement before the presidential election, Tinubu pledged to deliver reliable electricity and end the frustration of estimated billing for consumers. He also reportedly suggested that his performance on power supply would be a key measure by which Nigerians could assess his administration ahead of the next election cycle.

The video has gained renewed attention amid continuing challenges in Nigeria’s electricity sector.

Despite possessing an installed generation capacity significantly higher than current output, Nigeria continues to generate only a fraction of the electricity required to meet national demand. Daily available generation has generally remained far below the levels experts say are necessary to adequately serve the country’s growing population and economy.

The sector has faced recurring problems, including national grid disturbances, inadequate transmission infrastructure, gas supply constraints, distribution inefficiencies, and mounting debts across the power value chain.

These challenges have contributed to prolonged outages affecting homes, businesses, hospitals, educational institutions, and industries across many parts of the country.

Critics of the administration argue that the resurfaced video highlights a gap between campaign promises and the reality experienced by many Nigerians. Social media users have increasingly cited the footage while calling for greater accountability and measurable improvements in power delivery.

Supporters of the government, however, point to reforms introduced since 2023, including adjustments to electricity tariffs, efforts to settle market debts, investments in transmission infrastructure, and initiatives aimed at attracting private-sector participation in the power sector.

Government officials maintain that structural problems inherited over decades cannot be solved overnight and argue that ongoing reforms are laying the foundation for long-term improvements.

The debate has also drawn reactions from public figures, including entertainers and political commentators. While some have used the video to criticize the administration’s record on electricity, others have defended Tinubu and expressed support for his potential re-election bid in 2027.

Energy analysts note that reliable electricity remains one of the most important issues for Nigerian voters because of its direct impact on economic growth, job creation, industrial development, healthcare, education, and household welfare.

With the 2027 elections approaching, observers believe the power sector will remain a central topic in national political discussions, as citizens increasingly demand tangible improvements in one of the country’s most persistent developmental challenges.
