EFCC Probes Alleged ₦24.2bn Pantami Broadband Scandal amid NDC defection rumbling.

Fresh political intrigue is beginning to surround the reported investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission into an alleged ₦24.2 billion broadband deployment programme linked to former Communications Minister Isa Ali Pantami.

While the probe is officially said to focus on funds allegedly allocated during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari for broadband infrastructure across 63 locations nationwide, political observers are beginning to speculate that the renewed scrutiny may not be entirely disconnected from Pantami’s recent political realignment and reported emergence within the Nigeria Democratic Congress as a governorship aspirant in Gombe State.

Sources within political circles argue that the timing of the investigation has triggered suspicion, especially as Pantami’s name has increasingly surfaced in conversations surrounding opposition coalition building ahead of the 2027 elections.

Although there is currently no official evidence linking the alleged EFCC action to his political movement, supporters of the former minister are already portraying the development as a possible pressure tactic designed to weaken or intimidate emerging opposition figures before the next electoral cycle gathers momentum.

Others, however, insist that the issue should not be politicized. They argue that if public funds running into billions were truly committed to broadband expansion projects in airports, universities, markets and other strategic institutions, then accountability questions are legitimate regardless of who is involved politically.

At the center of the controversy is a growing demand for transparency: Were the broadband projects fully executed as claimed? Are the facilities operational today? Can Nigerians physically verify the infrastructure said to have been deployed?

For many critics, the scandal is no longer merely about budget figures. It has become a test of credibility surrounding one of the Buhari administration’s most celebrated digital economy initiatives.

The unfolding situation now places Pantami at the intersection of politics, public perception and anti-corruption scrutiny — a combination that could significantly shape both his political future in Gombe State and the wider opposition calculations ahead of 2027.
