Kwankwaso Hosts Peter Obi After NDC Screening

Former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso has confirmed receiving a courtesy visit from former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi following Obi’s successful screening as a presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

Kwankwaso disclosed the development in a statement released late Tuesday, where he described Obi as “my brother” and expressed confidence in the future of the party and the country’s political direction.

“The future is bright and full of promise,” Kwankwaso stated, a remark that has intensified speculation about growing cooperation and possible strategic alignment between the two prominent opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The meeting comes at a time of heightened political activity within the NDC, which has recently attracted several influential politicians, grassroots movements, and supporters from different regions of the country.

Political observers say the relationship between Obi and Kwankwaso could significantly shape the opposition landscape if both leaders maintain a united front within the party. Supporters of the two politicians have increasingly promoted the idea of a broad coalition capable of challenging established political structures in the next election cycle.

Obi, who gained massive national support during the 2023 presidential election, remains a strong political figure among youths and urban voters through the Obidient Movement. Kwankwaso, on the other hand, continues to command significant grassroots influence in northern Nigeria through the Kwankwasiyya movement.

Analysts believe the combination of both political structures could strengthen the NDC’s national reach if internal negotiations and alliance-building efforts remain stable.

The visit has also generated widespread reactions on social media, where supporters described the interaction as a sign of unity and maturity within the opposition camp. Others interpreted the meeting as part of broader consultations aimed at consolidating support ahead of future party primaries and coalition talks.

Within the NDC, ongoing efforts are reportedly focused on integrating new members, expanding party structures nationwide, and building a cohesive platform around governance reform, accountability, and national development.

The growing visibility of the party has coincided with increasing political realignments across Nigeria, as opposition politicians seek alternative platforms amid internal crises and leadership disputes within existing parties.

As consultations and strategic meetings continue among key political actors, the Obi-Kwankwaso relationship is expected to remain a major point of interest in discussions surrounding the future of opposition politics and coalition-building in Nigeria ahead of 2027.
