Against Wike threats; ADC National convention holds today at Rainbow Event Centre.

In a bold display of political resolve, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) is proceeding with its national convention today at the Rainbow Event Centre, defying what it describes as mounting pressure and intimidation from authorities aligned with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The convention, taking place in Abuja, follows allegations that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, attempted to block the event by threatening the venue’s operational license. Though no official confirmation has been issued by the authorities, the claims have heightened concerns over the state of political freedoms and the space for opposition activities in Nigeria.

Despite these reported challenges, the ADC has moved forward with its plans, emphasizing that all contractual obligations with the venue were duly fulfilled and that no external pressure should override lawful agreements or democratic rights.
The development once again brings attention to the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as critics argue that such incidents—if substantiated—suggest increasing intolerance for dissent.
At its core, the situation underscores a critical democratic principle: the right of political parties to assemble freely and organize without interference. When that right is perceived to be under threat, it raises broader questions about institutional neutrality and the health of Nigeria’s democracy.

Recall that ADC previous applications for Eagle Square and the National Stadium were turned down respectively before going ahead to book Rainbow Event Centre; a private business outfit in Abuja. This threats against opposition will only heat up the polity ahead of 2027 General Elections.

By proceeding with its convention, the ADC is making a clear statement about its stance in the face of adversity. Whether this moment signals a broader shift in Nigeria’s political climate or remains an isolated confrontation will depend largely on how relevant authorities respond and how firmly democratic norms are upheld.
For now, the unfolding events in Abuja reflect a contest not just of political strength, but of democratic values.
